Abando Crianza 2001
Santiago Ijalba grew up with Rioja and his vines. He was born in Haro in 1948 and in his mid teens was already working for a local winery. He was taken on full time at the age of 16 and worked there for more than 30 years. During that time, he helped establish the Rioja Wine Exporters Group, and obtained a degree in oenology in 1974. In the 1990’s he set up on his own in the Rioja Alta region. He bought a site close to Haro and built a smart new bodega and planted vines around. The bodega now includes a shop, wine club and dinning room. Santiago’s son, Roberto Ijalba, has also joined the business, specializing in modern winemaking. Their approach is modern, some of the wines are organic and all are made with natural yeast. |
